    Mind the Gaps

    Last Friday, I wrote that one of the reasons I try to participate in the Self-Stitched-September and Me-Made-May is because it forces me to examine holes in my self-made wardrobe.  I’ve been on a no-new RTW fast for sometime.  My most recent garment purchases were a t-shirt from a musician friend and a strapless bra, which I kind of despise.  I specify “new”, because I think thrifting is the highest form of recycling.  Over the past two weeks, of challenging myself to wear only Miranda-Made garments, I have been able to isolate some areas where I could use some amendments, additions, and some edits.     Self Stitched September 2016: September 01-September 13

    September 1 I wore this exact same outfit for Me-Made-May 2015, the one that fell apart after one week due to work travel.  Not this time!  I paired my gray cotton twill circle skirt, which I made Burda’s Linda pattern,  with a navy interlock blue Astoria pull over, from the Colette Seamwork collection.  I love these two patterns quite a lot.  I have made them and remade them several times.  I will probably make them again at some point.  Interesting fact, this skirt and the navy one were part of a set of four skirts that I made way back in 2011.  Right after I started sewing garments, having discovered…

    Kawaii Kitties in Kimonos: Adventures in Creative Contrasts

    There is a fantastic shop in Houston called “My Flaming Heart.”  The proprietress and artist in residence makes beautiful retro fashions in the most delightful and eclectic of fabrics.  My Flaming Heart frequently sells the remnants of these fabrics.  I have been hoarding this Alexander Henry print for about six years.  It was from a 2009 collection called Kitty Kokeshi and it has been out of production for who knows how long.  I have had it so long, that I had forgotten exactly how many yards I had.  When I started the stash busting, 2.5 yard strappy dress project, I pulled it out and discovered I had 2 yards exactly.
